Expanding on my Irish Times article which is here, I pin-point the best transitional shoes that will take you through August and well into autumn. Having exhausted all my heatwave appropriate gear, overdone the easy breezy floral midi, and bored of wearing the same summer shoes on rotation, I’m ready to get excited for chiller temps. It might be a little too premature to slip into cosy coats and chunky knits but I’m over having to be pedi-ready all the time in over-exposing flip-flops. Saying that, shoes are the easy place to start, and these pieces can easily slot into your between season wardrobe – think white boots, mules, slingback kitten heels, and animal print anything. It’s time to banish your summer slides (til next year) and get your feet into this transitional beauties.
The Western Boot
Less cowgirl and more western, these sleek boots have transitioned from the vintage pairs that I owned in the aughties when I was trying to channel my inner boho-Sienna Miller. Opt for a polished style that can easily be teamed with any outfit.
The Animal Print shoe
‘Tis the season of animal everything and shoes are getting the ultimate zoo-inspired makeover. Style it up now with summery polka dots and geometric prints but when winter rolls around it’s the perfect partner to checks and tartans.
Those clever mules allow you to have a foot in each season, both covering up your toes and liberating your ankles. Cropping up in flat styles or with a comfortable block heel, they are polished enough to wear to the office, with a tailored trouser or a clean line midi dress.
Slingback kitten heels
Just like the mule, but with that little bit added comfortable, the slingback kitten heel keeps out the oncoming chill but the open back allows you to expose some ankle so you feel like the summer isn’t all lost. Giving enough lift without restricting walking, add a pair of these to your footwear rotation and style up with jeans and a heritage blazer.
The ultimate in transitional footwear – the white boot – has been quietly maintaining a stranglehold on street-stylers’ feet for the past few seasons. Invest in a pair that hit at the ankle and team with midi skirts, printed dresses or, a pair of rolled up tailored trousers.
You can thank Alessandro Michele from dusting off the loafer from the Gucci archive and making it cool again, and the enduring appeal hasn’t stopped since. From flat to heeled, add an elegant, androgynous edge with the classic shoe.
