Coat Story

Fashion / October 23, 2017

And just like that, we’re cosying up, adding layers and making our winter coat investment decisions, but an investment doesn’t have to be pricey. A coat is the first step to your new season wardrobe and people automatically think it’s a major expense but it’s just about knowing where to go to nab those bargains. And where else than shopping emporium TK Maxx? They challenged me to shop and style up some winter gems.

With the endless search for the perfect coat, I was delighted to discover a massive outerwear offering – from puffas to leopard to shearling – whatever your preference, you’re bound to find a style that works for you at a price that suits. And that’s really the best bit – who doesn’t love a designer bargain, when you feel like you’ve saved you always want to splurge some more, and at TK Maxx there’s always plenty of change left over to get the rest of your winter wardrobe in check. I was particularly drawn to their knitwear selection with quality and cute cashmere pieces at competitive prices. Like a magpie, in the search for a winter coat, I got distracted by all the shiny and pretty accessories especially the handbags. Like I need another handbag! But I did manage to nab a designer metallic cross-body bag, that was over 50% less than the RRP. Win! But be warned, it’s almost inevitable that you’ll fall in love with something you weren’t looking for.

But back to my coat story, I’m a strong believer that a stylish coat (expensive or not), can kick up your look a notch. If you want to go classic with a designer find like the camel crombie below or unique with a bit of red shearling, TK Maxx ticks all the style boxes at all the right prices. I know people may find the selection overwhelming at TK Maxx but it’s just about being savvy – everything is divided into themed areas – knitwear, tops, denim, and then subdivided into sizes so it’s actually fast work to go through the rails. And you do have to be speedy to nab those gems – with deadly designer pieces at small prices – nothing hangs around for too long at TK Maxx – so if you love it grab it before someone else does! With regular deliveries, you can be sure that something else worth grabbing will be in-store in no time! But always try before you buy – with loads of fitting rooms, and a generous return policy, if you want to bring it home and try-on with other pieces in your wardrobe, TK Maxx makes it super easy not to make a sartorial mistake.

Check out my selection of the key coats for the season and how I will be wearing them below.

The Pea Coat

If you’re after an enduring style that will last – then this is it. In a sea of fleeting fashion trends, the pea coat has stood the test of time and is the perfect coat to pull out of your wardrobe season after season.

As well as teaming it with a classic stripe and denim combo like I did, this coat will work equally, as well worn over a floaty boho dress and boots.
Coat, €179.99, (RRP €405) | Jumper, €54.99 |Jeans, €39.99 | Clutch, €39.99 (RRP €80) | Boots, €54.99 (RRP €120)- all TK Maxx

The Shearling
You might have noticed red is everywhere right now but combining that colour with the fabric of the season – shearling in coat form – adds up to a double win. Cosy and cute, shearling is a lot of texture and fabric so I went down a size and teamed it with streamlined pieces, like these black skinny jeans, to counteract the volume.

Coat, €54.99 | Knit, €26.99 |Bag, €89.99 (RRP €160) | Jeans, €54.99 (RRP €110) |Shoes, €40 (RRP €120) | Teddy’s coat, €12.99 – all TK Maxx

The Camel Coat
I’m a guilty member of the camel coat fan club, when I came across this designer piece in TK Maxx I instantly jumped on it. While it still may seem pricey – the saving and the fact it’s a coat for life means it’s the ultimate investment.

Equally styled with red, black or grey, the camel coat shines teamed with neutrals like these cream cords and tan satchel.

Sunglasses €19.99 (RRP €49.95) | Coat €399 (RRP €1040) | Shirt, €16.99 | Cords €28 (RRP €200) | Bag €179 (RRP €405) | Loafers €40 (RRP €54.99) – all TK Maxx
